About Changing Tides

Our Mission

Changing Tides provides trauma-sensitive therapeutic services to individuals, couples, and families in a compassionate and knowledgeable environment. Our mental health therapists provide a unique and specialized skill set that values the importance of client collaboration and emphasizes the client as the expert in their own lives.

Our Vision

Changing Tides is dedicated to providing clinical supports and resources that promote community resilience. We seek to shift our community's response to experiences of adversity by de-pathologizing and reframing symptoms through a strengths-based, collaborative approach.

Walking the Path

The path towards healing takes our minds and hearts on a journey that brings up memories of early adversity, past traumas, and present-day challenges. This can feel overwhelming to process and navigate given the complexity of our lived experiences and their impact on well-being. Our therapists are trained in how childhood events intersect with current life dynamics and wellness. We bring this knowledge into a collaborative environment where we tailor treatment to personal strengths, interests, and needs.

We seek to empower people in the context of a therapeutic relationship that embodies a holistic approach, compassionate tone, and the possibility of finding hope for change and personal growth. We encourage you to give yourself permission to take this courageous step, honoring the parts that seek to enter the therapeutic relationship (because we know there are other parts saying heck no!).

We Walk with You

The therapists of Changing Tides are strengths-based and this allows for experiences to be normalized and validated. The stigma surrounding mental health often leads to the question of "What’s wrong with them?" and we hold firm in our belief that the true question is "What happened TO them?". This allows for a new perspective to take shape, as we better understand the thoughts and emotions that so often feel polarized and in conflict, yet typically have the same message when explored and better understood – a message of self-preservation and survival.

In the face of adversity and trauma, our need to adapt is activated. This allows us to find creative coping skills that are necessary to endure the challenges included with and following these difficult experiences. Our therapists acknowledge and honor this sense of resiliency while supporting people in understanding what thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are of benefit and which others no longer serve us in the present. Our therapists seek to de-pathologize symptoms and guide people towards a new understanding of self by holding space for the idea that we can be both happy and sad, take in the light and the dark with hope, and work through difficult situations while having a felt sense of safety.

Our History

Changing Tides was established by Letha in 2016. For many years Letha operated the business as a sole proprietor while maintaining her position as a full-time Clinical Associate Professor at Salisbury University. Letha and Ashley worked together as therapists through the County's Family Violence Programs. The pair moved into a partnership in 2022, with Letha stepping down from SU and Ashley leaving her position with the County.

Both Ashley and Letha grew up in Cecil County, MD and seek to give back to and invest in our local community. They have a passion for working with individuals who seek to understand the root of their challenges, going beyond the symptoms to understand the causes and experience genuine healing. These similar ways of thinking and practicing led to a desire to further their work and enhance community connections and a supportive presence.
